Unfortunately, more and more dogs and cats are starting to become overweight.  Obesity can be caused by many things such as a metabolic disorder.  Hypothyroidism can cause your dog or cat to gain weight unexpectedly.

However, obesity is usually brought on by a combination of poor diet and lack of exercise.  Pets which spend most of their time indoors are particularly at risk.  You do not want your dog or cat to become obese because it will increase the risk of many different health conditions.

Both dogs and cats that are obese can develop musculoskeletal problems leading to arthritis.  Cats can develop fatty liver disease, disorders of the skin, and lower urinary tract disease.  All pets that are obese can develop diabetes mellitus and have complications due to surgery.

If you notice your dog appears to be overweight, it is best to get him checked out by a veterinarian before you do anything else.  You should not start exercising your dog or cat before doing this because there may be a problem with his heart or lungs.
If everything checks out, then you will need to make sure your pet gets plenty of exercise.  You can provide your cat with various activities to keep it busy around the house.  Dog owners will need to take their dogs outside for a walk or jog a few times each day.

Overweight pets should not be forced into an excessive exercise regiment right away though.  It is best to start out slowly and work your way up.

Diet is also important when dealing with pet obesity.  You will need to start feeding your pet differently.  Feeding your dog or cat two or three smaller meals is better than feeding a couple of larger meals.  Your pet’s body will be able to take full advantage of the nutrients in the food this way.

Diet and exercise are especially important as your pet gets older.  There are special diet plans based on the specific age of your dog or cat.  Switching to this special diet is usually the best way to ensure your older pet gets the adequate amount of nutrients that is needed.

All pet owners should be aware that pet obesity is nothing to joke about.  It can lead to serious health conditions for your dog or cat.  If your pet is overweight, you need to do something about it immediately.  Start by taking it to the veterinarian for a full checkup.
